Rights and Translations: Complete Books

Book Cover Design Requirements

One of the conditions of our Translation Rights agreement is a requirement that the Signing Publisher use the original O'Reilly book cover art and design. We have put together these pages about cover design to help you fulfill the terms of the agreement as easily as possible.

Once you have signed an agreement with O'Reilly to translate a book, the original cover files will be sent to you. Be sure to fill out the Source File Requirements form accurately to ensure that you receive those files in a format that you can use.

Cover Mechanical Layout Specifications

To assist you in the design of your translated cover mechanicals, we have put together complete specifications and guidelines for the full book cover layouts (front, back, and spine). You should use these specifications to create your translated covers from the original artwork that will be provided to you once you've signed an agreement to translate a book. In addition, we have created sample layouts to be used as visual references. These can be viewed on the Web with your browser and may also be downloaded as Adobe Acrobat PDF files.

Required Approval Process

When you have created the translated version of a book cover, you must send it to the Product Design group in the U.S. for review and approval. Save your translated cover design as a digital file, either JPG, GIF, PNG, or PDF format. Please post the file on a website or send it as an email attachment to: intl_covereq@oreilly.com. If you post the cover on a website, please send email to: intl_covereq@oreilly.com notifying the U.S. office that the cover is ready for design review. Be sure to include the URL so we can access it online.

You must receive approval to proceed with the cover before your translation may be printed. If we have questions about your cover design, our designers will work closely with you to resolve them as quickly as possible. Please allow a minimum of 48 hours for this review.

Cover Color List

A listing of the color palette used for O'Reilly books. Although most of our book covers are created for printing in two colors, many of our translation partners prefer to print using CMYK process printing. We have provided CMYK equivalents for the Pantone Spot Colors we use on our two-color covers. All translated editions must use the U.S./English language colors assigned to those titles.
